2009 Summer Training Workshop Closes at Confucius Institute in Atlanta

The 2009 Summer Training Workshop for Chinese Language Teachers, co-sponsored by Hanban/CI Headquarters, the Confucius Institute in Atlanta, and Emory Center for Lifelong Learning, closed at 5pm on August 19. More than 60 Chinese teachers from metropolitan Atlanta, and Georgia, attended the two-day workshop. The teachers will receive certificates issued by Hanban, and those in the K-12 category will also receive their CEU (Continuing Education Units) from the co-sponsoring Emory Center.

The workshop opened at 9:30 on August 18, after two months of full preparations. Dr Rong Cai, Director of CI in Atlanta, made her welcoming remarks on behalf of Hanban and the Confucius Institute. Jun Tang, educational consul from Consulate-General in Houston, spoke of the promotion of Chinese language and culture in southern US, and commended the participating teachers for their role as “citizen ambassadors” in promoting Chinese.

The speakers were Lulei Li and Xiaofei Yin from East China Normal University, and Mingxia Dai from Shanghai Middle & High. For their expertise in teaching of Chinese as a foreign language, the lecturers followed a brief night’s rest with a total of 15 hours of training for participants. The three professors each had their own distinctive styles in terms of expertise and presentation. Their input fitted the varying needs of the participants, and brought in much applause in the lecture hall. The participants wanted more and the hours had to be extended.

With the joint efforts of Rong Cai, Changsheng Li, and Jian Chen of the Confucius Institute, the workshop attracted considerable media attention, and earned good words from the participating teachers and news coverage. Many attendees selected “Very Satisfactory” on their evaluation forms, and wait for more workshops of such a kind.
