Mary Brown Bullock served as the founding executive vice chancellor of Duke Kunshan University from 2012-2015. She lived in Kunshan, just outside Shanghai, and led Duke University’s effort to establish a joint venture university in China. The university opened in 2014. This was an entirely new institution which required U.S. and Chinese registration, construction, staffing, curricular planning, recruiting students and faculty. Her experiences working with Chinese educational authorities gave her insight into a joint venture university in China, current intellectual challenges and the wide range of U.S. educational activities in China. In addition to sharing these experiences she will reflect on comparisons with the first era of American universities in Republican China.
Mary Bullock was Visiting Distinguished Professor of China Studies at Emory University from 2007 to 2012.
