The workshop is led by Holli A. Semetko, Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Media and International Affairs and Professor of Political Science at Emory, and two members of her research team. As we are entering the fall 2020 U.S. presidential campaign, Dr. Semetko will discuss how China compared with several other countries In reporting the 2016 U.S. campaign and what we might expect this fall. Xinyan Xie, a member of the research team at the Center for Law and Social Science at Emory University, worked as a SURE student on research that uses computational methods to compare Chinese reactions on Sina Weibo to U.S. President Trump‘s tweets during the trade war in Spring 2019.  Michael Cerny, a 2020 Emory grad headed for Oxford University this fall, will report on our preliminary findings from a cross-national comparative study on China and COVID-19 that includes a larger team of students manually coding news in Q4 2019 and Q1 2020 in leading media in Canada and Mexico. The Canada team includes Brad Bennett, Ciara Murphy Aliye Korucu, Christine Zhu. The Mexico team includes Zoya Virani, Claudia Michaels, Ari Gassel, Lauren Szwarc. Stella Bush is also working on leading news media in France this summer.
